How to Style Disco Balls for Weddings and Parties + Hire Tips

Disco balls. They catch the light, lift a room, and somehow make every celebration feel a little more fun. But styling them for a wedding or event can feel tricky… where to hang them, how many to use, and how to make sure they fit your theme?

I’ve been there, and in this post, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned from our own wedding and the events I style with Reel the Love - practical tips, styling ideas, and lessons to make disco balls work beautifully in any space.

Why disco balls?

I’ve loved disco balls for as long as I can remember. There was one on my first date with Chris (a tiny detail that somehow felt important), and ever since then they’ve quietly followed our story. We even stood next to the biggest disco ball in the world at Bestival back in 2018, and 7 years later one made an appearance at our Vegas wedding!

They made their way to our UK wedding celebration at The Shack Revolution, and now they’ve found a home at Reel the Love too, available to hire across Dorset & Hampshire. A little piece of our story, shared with yours 🫶🏼

Timeless over trends

Disco balls might feel like they’re having a moment, but they’ve been around far longer than most people realise. They first appeared in jazz clubs and ballrooms over a century ago, long before disco music even existed!

They had their peak in the 70s, and they’ve never really disappeared - showing up in clubs, festivals, weddings, homes and chapels - reminding us that a little sparkle makes any space feel brighter.

There’s something quietly confident about them. They don’t demand attention, they just lift the mood and make a space feel more fun - which is exactly why they’ve become a staple in Reel the Love events.

Will they work with my theme?

One of the best things about disco balls is that they don’t try to take over - they simply reflect the vibe around them. They work beautifully with:

  • Bright, bold colour palettes

  • Soft, romantic tones

  • Bohemian festival vibes

  • Retro-inspired details

  • Monochrome schemes

Basically, whatever your theme, they fit right in. I’ve never seen one look out of place, they just add a bit of sparkle and make a space feel fun.

How to style Disco Balls

One of the things I love most is how versatile they are. They can completely change the feel of a space. Here are some of my favourite ways to style them:

  • Over the dance floor: instantly brings energy to the party

  • Clustered above the top table: adds subtle interest behind the main space

  • Tucked among flowers: softens the mirrored edges with natural textures

  • Hanging from beams or ceilings: makes them part of the architecture

  • Framing welcome signs: catches the eye as guests arrive

  • On plinths or as part of centrepieces: adds dimension to tablescapes

They move with your day - subtle during the ceremony or drinks, then more playful once the evening begins.

Working with florists

Disco balls and flowers complement each other beautifully, and I love how the two work together to create a playful look.

Some ideas I love:

  • Disco balls and florals around welcome signs

  • Hanging clusters combining flowers and disco balls

  • Plinths or centrepieces that mix blooms with disco balls

At our own wedding, we worked with our amazing florist, Jo, at Issy and Bella. Pairing them with florals completely transformed the space, and they photograph so well too.

Light is everything

Light makes all the difference. Daylight gives a soft glow, while pin spots or uplighting in the evening add depth, movement and colour. Even a simple setup brings disco balls to life.

For a recent event with Cocoloco, we teamed up with local Dorset lighting designer, Lamps & Amps, to create a pink-lit setup that completely changed the vibe at Deus Lodge. The space went from relaxed to full-on party mode, and the disco balls came alive in a way that made everyone stop and take notice.

Venue styling

Disco balls work in almost any venue:

  • Rustic barns: they soften the wood and add interest

  • Castles & historic spaces: a modern contrast

  • Industrial venues: they warm hard edges

  • Marquees: adding fun without taking up floor space

  • Coastal venues: catching natural light beautifully

I cover Dorset, Bournemouth, Poole & Hampshire, so wherever your celebration is, disco balls can be part of it.

Psstt… they’re sustainable too!

With the rise of “temu weddings,” it’s easy for décor to quickly end up in landfill, and that’s something I care about. The great thing about disco balls is that they aren’t single-use. They move from one celebration to the next, making them sustainable and practical, and they’re timeless too.

For Dorset couples looking for a planner with eco-friendly values, I can’t recommend Jess at Wild Soul Wedding Co. enough. I’ve worked with her personally, and she’s brilliant at creating beautiful celebrations while keeping sustainability front of mind.

Disco balls aren’t just for weddings

They work wherever you want to bring a little extra fun and personality.

  • Hen dos

  • Proposal setups

  • Birthdays

  • Baby showers

  • Any love-filled event!

Hiring disco balls with Reel the Love

Disco balls are large and tricky to transport, so hiring makes life easy. With Reel the Love you get:

  • Delivery and collection across Dorset, Bournemouth, Poole & Hampshire (20 miles included)

  • A range of sizes from 20cm to 70cm

  • Styling advice to make them fit your space and theme

I’ll help place and style them so you can relax and enjoy the day!

Final tips for getting the most from your disco balls:

  • Think about ceiling height: if it’s too low, hanging them can be tricky.

  • Consider interesting props or florals to style with them: I can work with your florist to make them feel part of your arrangements.

  • Don’t spread them too far apart: I can bring up to 25, and the best impact comes from clustering them together for maximum disco vibes.

  • Lighting is key: even a few well-placed lights can completely transform the room.
